Proud of Myself

I am really proud of myself.
Last night we had grilled cheese and tomato soup for dinner and I:

1. Did not boil the soup over. Believe it or not, the last three times I have made tomato soup it boiled over.  Did I forget about the soup again this time? Yes. But I planned ahead for my forgetfulness (How hard it is to remember one thing out of two in such a simple meal? Really hard for me, evidently), I did not put a lid on, put it on the back burner and had it really low.  Was it cold? Well... no, I turned it up in time.

2. Successfully tested a theory I had: One can cut three warm sandwiches at one time with a metal spatula without compromising the integrity of the triangle shape or shifting the bread and cheese to a non directly-on-top-of-each-other state. Woo hoo!

Go ahead and applaud, you need'nt be embarassed!

We love spring!

This spring has been really fun with Abigail because this is the first time she can remember seeing all the flowers and blooming trees. She gets so excited and often when we are driving the whole time she is shouting out "BLOSSOM!" (cherry blossom or bradford pear) or  "DOGWOOD!" or "'STERIA!" (wisteria). But don't worry, she's isn't a plant expert yet, she also says, "YELLOW ONES!" or pink, purple, white, red, etc, etc. Anyway, it's really fun.

Spring time means we have to pull weeds and we get to grow and plant flowers. We have to clean out the gutters and prune the plants, but we get to grill out and have s'mores. There is more light, more bugs, warmer weather, playgroup at the park, Easter, so many great things.

Yay! Grilling and eating outside!

Gorgeous amaryllis I got from Bethany for Christmas, it did really well!

I was so excited about growing flowers that I bought this amaryllis from Walmart to be friends with my other one. It was lame and didn't flower :(

Abigail and I cut some of the wild wisteria and had it at home for a few days.

She helped me plant some flowers too!

Proud and Otherwise Notable Moments

1. While Abigail and I were gone to Texas, my wonderful husband not only kept the house clean, but also fulfilled his promises to do dishes and vacuum, PLUS, he cleaned the gutters and pruned a plant that is trying to take over the house and backyard. I am very proud of him! Oh, and the milk wasn't gone either: *score!*

It took me no time at all to turn the spotlessly clean craft (coughdiningcough) table into this. Yes, I am ashamed.

2. While we were in the car once during our trip my little girl was asking me about dinosaurs and their bones, totally unprompted by me. She declared that she wanted to be a paleontologist when she grew up. Well, not in those words, but she said that she wanted to look for dinosaur bones and study them. Yes, this is very closely related to Archaeology, my minor in college *puffed out chest, proud smile.*  I have to say though, when I told her the next day that we were going to hang out with my dear friend Carissa and her boys at the the museum and see the dinosaurs, she looked shocked and asked, "A BOY thing?!"

Abigail excavating a sea shell out of a block of sand molded into a... sea shell (I know, original, right?). She was very proud of herself.  I was proud of her too.

Abigail with Hosea and Josias, standing in front of an "ancient" shark's jaws. I think Jonah could have fit in there. But those are some sharp teeth!

3. I took photos at my very first event! I borrowed the awesome lens (yes mine are awesome too, this one is just particularly awesome for indoor event situations) and flash from a friend at church. I was very brave and asked a bunch of people, most of them quite taller them me (when did I get so short?) to turn around and get their pictures taken. However, I did realize that I am way not loud enough for people to hear me counting while my face is behind a camera and in a room containing people drinking alcohol and music loud enough for us to hear over everyone else talking. It all worked out though.

The lovely Brandi and Frank, who hired me to help for Brandi's brother's rehearsal dinner. I was there mostly as a setup/take down person, but took some pictures too, so it counts. By the way, if you need a party planner, Brandi is awesome at it!

4. Abigail has a new friend, a few new friends really, from our thrift store visits with my mom.

This is Bambi. Abigail named him after...er.. well... Bambi. And to tell the truth, he might actually BE Bambi. She has seen the movie and read the book and did quite well with the whole, mother was shot and eaten and baby deer was left to fend for himself thing.

This is Bambi with his friend the cockatiel, who Abigail just informed me is named, Neel-silly-billy-ei-ei-ei. That means she doesn't have a name for him. They played together a lot on the way home from Texas.

And this, my dear readers, is what Bambi looked like when Abigail tied him up in a rubber band, cooked him on her play stove and handed him to me on a plate, saying, "Here. It has meat inside."

5. Today all three of us, independent of one another, picked orange shirts and blue bottoms (jeans for me and Jake, skirt for Abigail) to wear. Yes, we did actually wear them too. Though Jake only got to wear his non-work clothes after 8:45 pm today.

6. I cannot confirm or deny if the following video is of Abigail. It is most likely a video of a little girl who was put into a dry fountain by her mommy. The little girl may have been encouraged to look for silver coins, I do not know. I'm guessing, but I'm not sure, the money would certainly be a good thing for the little girl, since her mommy probably charges her ten cents every time she sees the little girl pick and eat a booger (If I were that mommy I would draw a distinction between picking vs. picking and eating. Because, lets face it, sometimes boogers have to be picked. They never have to be eaten) and the little girl is probably running low on dimes and nickels and her mommy doesn't want any more pennies. But I wouldn't know for certain.

However, if it was Abigail, I would feel compelled to explain that though the girl says, "I should get this one, in case I pick a nose," in the video, that does not mean that she is in the habit or even allowed to pick anyone's nose except her own (I definitely have a America's Funniest Home Videos clip in mind when I think of the permissibility of picking noses other than your own). I would also guess that she made $1.50. My husband just informed me that he thinks this is stealing.... hmmm... I was personally of the persuasion that if you have a fountain in a shopping center and you turn off the water and drain it unexplainably in the middle of spring (ah yes, it was 80 degrees today) and don't take the money out, that you are hoping and even expecting nimble, energetic youngsters to come clean it out for you. What do you think?

Five Mix Ups

I am thoroughly convinced now that Abigail is a visual learner. She has been producing some mighty fine art these days and she gives us some other clues too- mainly in her lack of attention or lack of importance she gives words. HOWEVER, Daddy is reading Abigail The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and she has grown into doing a great job listening and enjoying being read to from a book without pictures (for the most part). Anyway, here are a few examples of words she continually mixes up, despite us correcting her every time!  I don't mind, I'm sure she'll get it when she needs too :).

1. dinner and lunch
2. him and her/ he and she
3. hunting and hiking
4. anything and nothing
5. week/day/month/year/morning/evening ("Last day" could mean yesterday, this morning or last year)

Names also aren't high on her priority list. So don't worry if she forgets yours- she remembers your face! (it's not her fault, she gets it from her mama).

Well, this isn't C.S. Lewis, but this is what they look like if Abigail is sitting still. Jake dressed her that day. Nah, just kidding, she dressed herself. By the way- after three weeks, Jake's pain has almost totally left! Praise the Lord!

Unusual family time

As some of you know- this week was not a regular week for us here at the Hanson house! Monday morning saw us in the ER for Jake, who was experiencing classic heart attack symptoms out of the blue- I know, it was a big surprise that a fit 30 year old would be having these symptoms. We thought of all kinds of other things it could be- gallbladder, heart burn, etc- and finally decided that we needed to take him in right away to get checked out.  His pain was in his upper left chest and into his left arm, sometimes during work, sometimes during rest. When stressed (specifically one time his wife stressed him out), he turned white as a sheet (well, really more of that horribly sickly white) and nauseous.

After spending half of the day at the ER, we heard from the doctor that it most definitely was not a heart attack, but he wanted Jake to see another doctor to find out what it was. He said it could be his heart, his lungs, the muscles in his chest, esophagus, ribs, etc. No telling without more tests, which of course the ER is not going to do, since it wasn't pressing. He referred Jake to a cardiologist at the hospital we were at- the one closest one to us. We don't have insurance, we told him, where else can we go?

The next day, Jake was off to the county hospital to enroll in their 'program.' Once enrolled, he was informed that they could not take the referral from the other hospital, that he would have to see the PCP there and then be referred to one of their specialists. Ok, fine. But it takes 2-3 months (or weeks? not clear on this...) to get an appointment with their PCP! We are going to make the appointment there and wait it out, but we would appreciate your prayers that this constant pain would be healed!

We have done a lot of internet diagnosis research and found several conditions that mimic heart attack pain, and some them heal themselves within 12 weeks.  We are praising the Lord that this does not seem to be a life-threatening problem and for the prayers of those around us for our peace about it. We will let you know if anything changes!

Here is a link to Jake's sermon this past week where he talks about some of it!
